Westlife’s Farewell is highlight of SECC’s busiest year

Action-packed 2012 will be boost for city WESTLIFE FAREWELL IS HIGHLIGHT OF SECC’S BUSIEST YEAR

GLASGOW’s top conference and concert venue is set for its busiest ever year which will generate hundreds of millions of pounds for the city.

The curtain is set to rise on an action-packed 2012 at the SECC when it hosts the start of six years of major medical conferences while the curtain will come down on Westlife in the summer when the Irish boys give their final live performance on stage before splitting up the band.

The Clydeside hub is gearing up to make another financial splash with a string of events to underpin Glasgow’s growing reputation as a global venue for conferences and concerts. Music fans are being served another year of top acts with live performances from a range of artists from Snow Patrol and Florence & The Machine to The Wanted as well as the Strictly Come Dancing live tour over four nights next month.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds perform in the city for the first time when the SECC hosts a sold-out gig on Friday, February 24. But there will be tears in the summer when the venue stages the last ever live performances of Westlife, the Irish boyband that’s amassed 26 top 10 hits, 11 smash-hit albums and collectively sold 44 million copies around the world.

Band members Nicky Byrne, Kian Egan, Mark Feehily and Shane Filan have decided to call it a day after performing together for 14 years. Their final tour launches in Newcastle and ends in Glasgow with three shows on June 16, 17 and 19. Up to 40 exhibitions staged by the consumer and trade sectors will also be staged at the SECC throughout the year including the new Holiday & Travel show and Fishing Exhibition as well as Girls Day Out, Scottish Caravan & Outdoor Leisure Show, Model Rail Scotland, the Scottish Wedding Show, Hobbycrafts & Creative Stitches and the Scottish Bike Show. Scott Taylor, chief executive of the Glasgow City Marketing Bureau, said the riverside venue, along with Glasgow’s universities, had injected an extra £130m into the city’s economy last year and praised the SECC for making a “significant” contribution.

Shane Filan will be most successful after Westlife split, predicts Louis Walsh

LOUIS Walsh has predicted Shane Filan will be the most successful solo artist of Westlife after the band splits next summer.

And the X Factor judge said the 32-year-old is the only one of the four who will remain in his stable of acts when they go their separate ways after 14 years together.

The pop guru told RTE TV’s Saturday Night Show that he could see the dad of three from Sligo having a career like big band singer Michael Buble.

He said: “I’m going to manage Shane Filan. He’s going for the Michael Buble market. They’re all good but I can only manage one. I love Shane’s voice. I love Mark’s voice too.

“The other boys, Kian and Nicky, are going to do TV and different stuff and radio. They are going out on a high.

“Shane is going to be a big artist. I will only manage someone if I believe in them. If I get someone amazing I will manage them.”

The TV star also insisted he won’t be dressing up as a woman again after posing as his former the X Factor colleague Cheryl Cole last week.

He said he was surprised by the stir surrounding his Cheryl impression.

Louis, 59, added: “I’ve never done it before and I’m not going to do it again and I’ve never worn high heels. You only live once and you have to have a laugh.

“It took about an hour. It was fun. I didn’t know it was going to be on the front page of the paper in Ireland. I’m not ashamed. It was fun.

“I think my family might be disowning me. I’m going home for Christmas, what the hell. I actually look a bit like my mother in it.”

And Louis insisted he would not be stepping down from X Factor after reports that fellow judge Kelly Rowland wanted him axed.

He said: “I’m not giving it up, no way, unless I’m sacked. I like Kelly, I do like her. None of us are hired again. Nobody is signed. I hope to do it. I’ve done it for eight years and I hope to do it another year.”

And the music manager hit back at Samantha Mumba’s recent claims that he didn’t spend enough time on her career.

Louis said: “She is a very nice girl. I got her a record deal and she didn’t even have to sing. I just walked her into the record company, Polydor, and they saw her and they signed her.

“She had a massive, massive career but maybe she didn’t work hard enough because she was dropped by the record company. I wasn’t dropped. I’m still working with them.”

Westlife impress fans with farewell programme For The Last Time

Westlife fans have taken to Twitter to express their joy as their favourite band’s swansong programme Westlife: For The Last Time aired on ITV.
Featuring songs like You Raise Me Up and Flying Without Wings, Westlife: For The Last Time was heaven on Earth for fans of the band, as they looked back on their 14-year career with the help of Christine Bleakley.

Westlife fans flocked to Twitter to share their excitement as Kian Egan, Mark Feehily, Nicky Byrne and Shane Filan sang and sat on stools in the hour-long ITV special.

The top tweet relating to the show read: ‘It might be #westlifeforthelasttime, but there will never be a wrong time to sing along to one of their songs.’

One Westlife-mad Twitter user wrote: ‘No band will ever be as great as them, I’ve grown up with Westlife my whole life, wish they weren’t splitting up’.

Another fan tweeted: ‘they should make #Westlifeforthelasttime as long as their career, it would be endless because they’ll forever live on!

‘Further praise came in the form of: ‘There will never be a boyband like them. #westlifeforthelasttime’. Naturally, the show also had its detractors.

One Twitter user wrote: ‘#WestlifeForTheLastTime who would even watch that? their all fat, ugly and can’t sing for their lifes! #poor’.

Another said there ‘isn’t enough irony in the world to express how bad this band is’.

Another added simply: ‘slowly dying #westlifeforthelasttime’.

Westlife’s Shane Filan close to a solo deal

Westlife star, Shane Filan, is close to sealing a solo deal as several UK record labels are battling it out to sign the singer.

Lead vocalist, Shane, and his manager Louis Walsh, have been in talks with several record companies in London this week. It’s believed that at least four different labels are making a bid to sign the Sligo dad of three and release his debut solo album at the end of next year.

“There’s four, possibly five labels so far who have made it clear that they want to sign Shane,” said a music source. “He’s an incredible singer and he already has a very good idea of the kind of album he wants to make. He and Louis have been in meeting after meeting this week and are looking at their options. It’s looking very good for Shane – he has his choice of record deals.”

Shane has made no secret of his hopes to go solo after Westlife split up next year.

“Everyone’s thought about going solo – I would love to continue singing for a living,” he said. “I’d love to keep singing after Westlife. You’ve got to get a record deal first but none of us wants to retire at 32 years old.”

Louis Walsh tipped Shane to become the new Michael Buble after the band announced their plans to split in 2012, “Shane Filan has one of the greatest voices out there,” said Louis. “He’s a complete natural – he’s never, ever out of tune. He wants to do an album of modern, contemporary songs along the lines of Michael Buble – something that would have wide appeal. He can tackle any music really simply because he has the voice.”

Westlife insist they’ve already turned down a multi-million pound deal from Sony to stay together. “We walked away from a multi-million pound record deal that would have changed our lives for ever, secured our future beyond anything,” said Kian Egan.

“It’s not about the money. We’d have made far more on a new record than we ever would with a comeback tour.”
